What people are saying about Sohl Guitars
I took my Guild D-40 (1960s) to Matt for some needed repairs and adjustment. My guitar's previous life before I bought it in 1995 was not so kind to it and in addition it had developed some issues over time due to playing that required a complete setup. Matt re-seated/re-glued the bridge (the bridge was lifting off the guitar in some parts), replaced the nut and put in a new saddle both with new bones, complete re-fretting (worn frets), did a new setup and threw on some new Elixir strings. The action and has never been this low and the playing never felt this effortless and good. It almost feels like a new Guild with that warm sound and smooth broken-in playing feel. I am very happy. I found Matt very knowledgeable and skilled. I also liked his honesty, he would tell what he can can't do. I would highly recommend Matt. I am happy I trusted him with my guitar repair. Thanks Matt.

I bought this Gibson SG for my son about 18 years ago while he was in High School. He lost interest in playing and it sat around my house all that time. The action was high and uncomfortable to play. I took it to Matt recently and he set it up properly and put new strings on it. Now it plays like dream . Thank you Matt for making this guitar so comfortable to play now.

Matt is a professional. His work comes from a place of love, and it shows. Don't go with your "buddy who can do it cheaper", support a local independent Maine business.

I had a show to play in Dallas, Texas and I needed to get my Bass fixed quickly and to be honest, I had neglected that poor instrument for way too long. The neck was bowed, the bridge was whatever the opposite of Intonated is (Notonated, Untonated, Lacktonated...) and most of all the pots were bad. I would love to say it was from the vast amounts of sweat, blood and tear that had gotten into them causing them to short out but we all know I am not practicing 6-8 hours a day like I did when I was in college and didn't actually take a full load of classes. No, I was in the REAL world, where I drive a volvo and work a job nobody wants to do. That guy doesn't practice 6-8 hours a day anymore. The tears and blood were there only because I had lost my callouses but there was never enough to fault the pots. ANYWAY, my bass needed some TLC so I could play. I also needed it done fast and thankfully I got it back in time. So if you need someone to correct the bow in the neck of your bass, Balance the pickups, salvage or repair your pots, intonate the bridge, throw on a fresh set of string (because I am old and I hated putting on new strings even when I was young), well you only have one place to go. Go to Sohl Guitars, get that beat up Scheckter bass back into show room quality. I am not saying Matt dragged an Abizzal Deamon from the 4th Ring of Hell just so he could calibrate the correct amount of Cacophony needed to appease my Norwegian Black Metal needs. What I am 'suggesting' is maybe let him take a look at your rig, pull the gremlins out of your pots and make you smile ear to ear when you plug back into your stack of HellDrivers and Necromantic Amps. It will be the best decision of your Musical Life. Why are you still reading this...get thee to Sohl!!!

Matt was recommended to me by, of all things, AI. I couldn't believe we have such a talented and experience guitar tech and luthier right here in our back yard in the Lakes Region of Western Maine. I've had issues with my 1983 Peavey T-27 guitar and went in thinking I'd need to get a bone nut, but he talked me out of it after checking it out, recommending a fret level and setup instead, saving me some serious money. It was only after he breathed new life into my guitar that I found all these reviews, and I couldn't agree with them more! I feel like I've got a brand new guitar and it plays and sounds incredible now! Matt leveled and polished the frets, raised the nut, straightened the neck, found and re-soldered a loose ground on one of my pick-ups, and wouldn't let me leave his shop until I tried it out--he did a thorough job and I couldn't be happier! No more fret buzz, the action is incredible. So charming too, his love for his craft and the gear just rubs off on you and I can't help but smile. I've recommended him to all my guitar friends and neighbors, I won't go to anyone else.

I can't say enough about how good it is to have a local shop and tech that is really incredible. Matt's talent, professionalism, and knowledge is unmatched to anywhere else I've been. On top of him being my go-to guitar tech guru, he and I also put together a fully custom guitar. With his expertise and our collective work we managed to make the best playing guitar I have ever owned. He allowed and facilitated a fully custom body and neck to be made from scratch. I did the rough work, but his magic completed all of the finish, install and setup that makes this guitar great. Please pay him a visit for all of your guitar and bass needs, he won't disappoint!
